Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the newly constructed Quaid-i-Awam Outpatient Department (OPD) Block at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where outpatient services are now operational. During the ceremony, Wahab stated that the new block is intended to improve healthcare services for patients as part of a broader effort to modernize the hospital.
Wahab announced plans to establish a board called Friends of Karachi to oversee the hospital’s operations and improve its management. This proposed board is intended to include representatives from both the public and private sectors and will also monitor other civic matters. Wahab said the goal is to create a sustainable system that continues to function regardless of changes in leadership.
The Mayor outlined a two-phase plan for hospital improvements. The first phase focuses on medical services, while the second phase will address administrative operations, including the supply and distribution of medicines.
Wahab stated he has decided to suspend medicine purchases until an effective distribution system is established. The administration intends to address gaps between procurement and delivery to ensure medicines reach patients through a transparent process. Additionally, Wahab emphasized that improving cleanliness and building maintenance at government hospitals is just as important as providing medical treatment.
