The Sindh government has officially designated Tharparkar as a calamity-hit district following widespread drought-like conditions. The decision was made during a meeting led by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who instructed authorities to implement immediate measures to assist the region.

A briefing provided to the chief minister revealed that all seven talukas in Tharparkar are experiencing drought-like conditions. Data from the agriculture extension department estimated that approximately 90% of crops have been lost, with the total destruction or loss of productivity ranging between 85% and 90%. Officials stated that uneven rainfall caused natural grass and crops to dry up before they could reach maturity.

Regarding specific weather data, the chief minister was informed that rainfall across the seven talukas in September 2026 ranged from as little as one millimetre to a maximum of 36 millimetres.

In response to the crisis, CM Murad directed authorities to ensure the people of Tharparkar have access to drinking water. He ordered the immediate repair and restoration of inactive reverse osmosis plants and commanded that all existing water supply sources be restored without delay.

The chief minister also instructed the chief secretary to investigate the feasibility of constructing a water pipeline from Naukot to Mithi and to begin long-term planning for the area's water supply. Additionally, he requested recommendations on how to support livestock impacted by the drought.

CM Murad stated that the Sindh government would not leave the affected people of Tharparkar alone and would provide every possible assistance, ordering continuous monitoring of relief efforts in the drought-affected areas.
