The carcass of the world’s largest marine animal, a blue whale, washed ashore on the coast of East Bay, Gwadar, behind the Coast Guard office. The stranded whale is estimated to be around 30 feet in length.
According to local sources, the blue whale had been seen swimming in the waters off Gwadar for the past two days before it washed ashore and became stranded today.
WWF-Pakistan Technical Advisor Muhammad Moazzam Khan stated that the whale likely lost its way after entering shallow waters, where its navigation may have been affected. Khan said the death of a large whale is a matter of concern for marine biodiversity.
WWF-Pakistan has launched an investigation to determine the causes of the whale’s death. According to Khan, incidents of blue whales becoming stranded have occurred in Pakistan’s coastal areas in the past as well.
WWF-Pakistan maintains records of stranded whales along coastal areas and continues to take measures for the conservation of rare marine life and awareness regarding marine biodiversity.
