The NVIDIA Board of Directors has announced it is initiating an independent investigation into the relationship between founder and CEO Jensen Huang and Alice Huang, an executive at Megaspeed. The inquiry comes following reports that Huang was the target of a foreign intelligence effort.
A committee of independent directors, supported by outside independent counsel, will oversee the process. The Board stated it prioritizes U.S. national and economic security, which it describes as paramount to the interests of NVIDIA and its shareholders. The Board clarified it has no reason to believe that NVIDIA secrets or national security were compromised, but the inquiry will examine all available information.
Jensen Huang has fully supported the review and committed to cooperating with it. The Board expressed confidence in Huang and his leadership team, stating they will provide updates as appropriate.
The New York Times reported last month that Huang had developed a “close relationship” with the Megaspeed executive. Huang later admitted in a memo to the company that the relationship was romantic in nature. US officials believe Alice Huang was feeding information directly back to Beijing.
Megaspeed is a customer of Nvidia and is currently the subject of a Commerce Department investigation regarding whether it was smuggling AI chips to China. The Commerce Department views these chips as crucial to the US maintaining technological supremacy.
Both the Biden and Trump administrations have restricted the sale of these chips to China. While President Trump has loosened some restrictions, he still bars sales of Nvidia’s most powerful chips to Chinese firms, requiring the Commerce Department to approve individual firms to handle them.
There is also concern regarding Huang's close relationship with Donald Trump and what insights into the administration’s AI deliberations he may have been privy to. Questions remain as to whether any of that information may have been shared with Alice Huang and eventually reached Beijing.
