Apple CEO John Ternus is pressuring AI czar Craig Federighi to speed up the Siri roadmap to deliver a powerful AI agent capable of competing with Meta’s Muse or OpenAI’s Dots. While Federighi has managed to deliver a functional version of Siri AI on an "incredibly short timeline," the company recognizes it is not currently keeping pace with its competitors.

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is working to make Siri more agentic, which would allow the assistant to control third-party apps and execute complex tasks. Two major improvements are expected in the coming months. The first will provide Siri with fine-grained control over Apple’s first-party apps, such as organizing Safari tabs or cropping and rotating images in Photos. These features are expected to arrive with iOS 27.3.

The larger shift involves integration with third-party applications, which Gurman says is likely to arrive later, in the Spring. This would enable Siri to perform actions like booking dinner reservations through OpenTable or placing orders via Grubhub.

Beyond these specific tasks, Apple intends to push Siri toward becoming more agentic by enabling it to perform ongoing tasks rather than just one-off actions. Gurman notes that rivals like Grok, Muse, and Dots can track goals and pursue objectives without the user initiating every individual step. Gurman stated that Apple ultimately wants to move in this direction and believes the company could make Siri more like an agent as early as next year, noting that the company has "not that it has much of a choice, given current consumer and market demands."
