Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi stated that the Lahore Press Club (LPC) has consistently played a leading role in the struggle for press freedom and has stood by the truth. Speaking to the media during the club’s ‘Guest of Honour’ programme on Saturday, November 7, the governor acknowledged that journalists face numerous challenges and prayed that Allah Almighty grant them the strength to overcome these difficulties.
The governor emphasized that strong communication is essential for a progressing society, stating, “If communication is strong, nothing can stop a society from progressing. However, if communication becomes weak, no one can ensure the development of society.”
Reflecting on the PML-N's time in power, Hashmi said the party paid special attention to the national economy, infrastructure development, and the problems of ordinary people. He recalled Nawaz Sharif’s tenure as Punjab chief minister in 1985, noting that Sharif focused on infrastructure and introduced projects such as airports, motorways, and the Yellow Cab Scheme. In response to a question, Hashmi stated that Nawaz Sharif took all communities along, including Baloch and Pashtuns.
Regarding the potential creation of new provinces in Sindh, the governor said the decision rests with the people of the province. He noted he would be in a better position to respond to that question if it were raised by journalists in Sindh.
Hashmi observed that while print and electronic media were traditionally the primary forms of media, social media has engaged in activities merely to gain popularity, which ultimately led to the introduction of laws. He stressed that both the government and society must play their respective roles to address current challenges. He also described Karachi as the gateway to Pakistan, noting its significant contribution to the national economy and tax revenue.
Earlier that day, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari described Hashmi as a political worker who has opened the doors of the Governor’s House to the common people since assuming office. Ansari stated that Hashmi had made great sacrifices in politics. At the end of the programme, Ansari presented the governor with a bouquet and a commemorative shield.
