US general awarded the Medal of Distinction for his key role in Pakistan-US military relations
The Government of Pakistan has awarded the country’s highest military honour, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), to the Commander of the US Central Command, General Michael E. Corella, in recognition of his outstanding services in promoting Pak-US long-term military cooperation.
According to the Pakistan Army Public Relations Department (ISPR), Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) on General Michael E. Corella during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Islamabad.
The statement appreciated his services to security and stability in the region and efforts to strengthen the strategic defense relationship between Pakistan and the United States. The visionary leadership of General Corella has further strengthened the partnership between the Pak Army and the US CENTCOM in the field of mutual trust, defense cooperation and counter-terrorism.
The ISPR has stated that their continued involvement is a reflection of Pakistan’s pivotal role in regional peace and stability. This highest national honor is not only an acknowledgment of General Corella’s services but also reflects the growing military relationship between Pakistan and the United States.
The statement also said that during his visit to Pakistan, General Corella held meetings with the President, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and senior civilian and military leadership to discuss regional security, military cooperation and emerging international threats including terrorism.
Earlier, General Corella was presented with a guard of honor by a guard of all three Pakistani armies upon arrival at the Presidential Palace.
The honor affirms the strong foundations of the Pak-US strategic partnership and the two countries’ shared commitment to regional peace and security, ISPR said in a statement.
