Standing committees are not to end cases, we will follow the law: Azam Nazir Tarar
Speaking in the National Assembly, Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar said that standing committees were not formed to pardon cases. We are bound by law and work will be done according to law.
Azam Nazir Tarar said that the rules of the standing committees were made by everyone and it was not possible to take the power of police investigation from these committees. He said that if the first page and page 17 of the Standing Committee agenda would be about Prisoner No. 804, the Assembly Secretariat would not be able to do anything.
He added that the standing committees are not for facilities or personal gain in the prison, but for legislation and monitoring.
During the Law Minister’s speech the opposition raised noise, banging desks and shouting slogans. On this occasion, Azam Tarar said that the opposition should not only criticize, but also have the courage to listen.
Azam Nazir Tarar alleged that there were serious human rights violations during the PTI era, targeting political opponents. He added that the opposition was adopting a frivolous attitude just to please the founder PTI.
The law minister clarified that no minister has the power to pardon corruption cases. He sarcastically said:
“I wish the Ministry of Human Rights had that authority and I would have been present, I wish the prison allowed husbands and wives to be kept together and I would have.”
He questioned that:
“Didn’t Maryam Nawaz’s room door be broken by breaking the chadar and the wall? Faryal Talpur was put in jail before Eid, was the chadar and the wall respected?”
Azam Tarar also said:
“I would have been happy if it had been appreciated that for the first time Pakistan got A status globally, the Child Marriage Act or the Christian Marriage Act would have been a big achievement. But alas, the innocent topic was politicised.”
He clarified that the budget allocation has nothing to do with the standing committee, the Ministry of Human Rights has four commissions, but the standing committees have no authority to hold meetings in jail, to meet spouses together, or to get dates from the courts.
