Indian government’s stubbornness maintains, announces not to renew Indus Basin Treaty
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has said that India will never revive the Indus Basin Treaty with Pakistan. He claimed that the water going to Pakistan would now be diverted for India’s internal use.
“The water that is now going to Pakistan will be diverted to Rajasthan by building a canal. Pakistan will not get the water to which it has no right,” Shah said.
It may be recalled that on April 22, 26 people were killed and about a dozen injured in a shooting incident at a tourist spot in Pahalgam in occupied Kashmir, after which India started accusing Pakistan without any evidence and unilaterally suspended the Indus Basin Treaty.
Pakistan’s position is that the Indus Basin Treaty is a bilateral international agreement between Pakistan and India, which India cannot unilaterally terminate.
The agreement was brokered by the World Bank in 1960, and any change can only be made with the consent of both countries.
