The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a hike of Rs2.37 per unit in the electricity tariff. This increase, which falls under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September, will be reflected in consumers' bills starting in November. The price increase will also apply to K-Electric consumers.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had originally requested a larger tariff increase of Rs2.56 per unit for the September fuel price adjustment.

In a separate decision, Nepra approved an increase of Rs2.32 per unit for the concessional rate regarding additional electricity consumption for industrial and agricultural consumers. Nepra has forwarded this decision to the federal government. Under this revised rate, electricity provided through the additional consumption package will cost Rs25.30 per unit, rising from the previous rate of Rs22.98. This new rate is scheduled to take effect from the November billing cycle.

The federal government currently provides relief to industrial and agricultural consumers on their additional electricity consumption ranging from Rs11 to Rs15 per unit.

The decision was reached through the casting vote of the Nepra chairman. However, two members, Amna Ahmed and Maqsood Anwar Khan, submitted dissenting notes. In their dissenting note, the members termed the proposed rate of Rs25.30 per unit baseless.

In October last year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled the "Roshan Economy Power Package." This scheme set a discounted tariff of Rs22.98 per unit for industrial and agricultural users for electricity consumed above last year's usage. The goal of the package was to spur production, exports, and jobs without shifting costs to households.

Effective from November 2025 to October 2028, the three-year scheme maintains base consumption on existing rates, while only incremental units are priced at Rs22.98. This move effectively monetises surplus power at a level well below current tariffs, which are about Rs34 for industry and Rs38 for agriculture. The relief plan offers progressive tariff discounts for higher electricity usage in both the industrial and agricultural sectors.
