A senior official from the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) was killed in a targeted shooting outside his office in Peshawar on Friday morning. The incident occurred in the upscale Hayatabad neighborhood in front of the NADRA Region Office.
Eyewitnesses reported that NADRA deputy assistant director Fahad was walking toward his office building after parking his car in a lot across the street. Unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on him. Police stated that the official died on the spot while the attackers fled the scene unchallenged.
CCTV footage of the incident has been widely circulated on social media. Following the shooting, police and security forces cordoned off the site to gather evidence. The police established pickets across the city and initiated a search operation.
Investigators are currently collecting CCTV footage from nearby buildings and reviewing recordings from the Peshawar Safe City project to identify the killers. Authorities are also investigating the possibility of some personal enmity. Some officials stated that police found images of the assailants and shared them with NADRA for identification.
Officials noted that the assistant director, who was a nephew of MNA Noor Alam Khan, typically arrived at the office with guards in a bullet-proof car. However, on Friday, he arrived alone in his own vehicle.
NADRA was established during the Musharraf era to create a comprehensive database of Pakistan's citizens. In recent years, the institution has cancelled thousands of Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) issued to foreign nationals, specifically Afghan refugees, as part of a government campaign that includes the repatriation of Afghans who have lived in Pakistan for decades.
