Apple has announced that more than 100,000 apps have already been optimized for the iPhone Duo, a foldable smartphone that began shipping two weeks ago. The company stated that thousands of additional optimized apps are being added to the App Store daily as developers update software for the foldable display.
Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, said that developers have quickly adopted the new device. Apple highlighted several specific apps that now support the foldable smartphone, including Microsoft Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Word, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Netflix, Zoom, and Amazon Prime Video. Other optimized apps identified by the company include Etsy, Goodnotes, Halide Mark III, NBA, NHL, Fantastical, Flighty, MLB, and SmartGym. When viewed on the device, Apple identifies these apps with a “Made for iPhone Duo” badge on their App Store pages.
To improve app support, Apple has conducted more than 50 in-person workshops across 19 cities over the past month, which attracted more than 2,000 developers. The company says that apps built using standard SwiftUI and UIKit components can automatically adapt to the iPhone Duo’s displays. Additionally, Apple has introduced new APIs that allow developers to create custom layouts and adjust apps based on the foldable’s hinge positions.
Despite this growth, Apple noted that many of the millions of titles available on the App Store are not yet fully optimized for the iPhone Duo. While older apps can still run on the device, some do not fill the inner display properly, which leaves unused space around the interface. Google Maps was recently among the apps to receive an update for full iPhone Duo compatibility. Apple expects developers to continue releasing optimized versions of their apps at an increasing rate.
