New Mexico judge orders Meta to pay $25 billion penalty

A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion following a jury's determination that the company misled users about its data protection measures and its policing of misinformation and hate speech. Nearly $1 billion in a separate judgment was also issued against Meta in New Mexico.
This summer, attorneys general from across the United States announced a $17 billion settlement with Meta. Most states resolved their claims through a $459 million payment, which Meta will distribute over a 10-year period.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated, "As I said at the time, the multi-state settlement with Meta was a slap on the wrist." Uthmeier added, "Florida isn’t going to sell out to Meta. We’re going to hold them accountable."
Meta’s chief legal officer C.J. Mahoney said the company is "confident we will prevail on appeal" and described the penalty as "a tax on speech."
