Tehran court sentences Jafar Panahi to over five years in prison

A Tehran court sentenced Jafar Panahi to five years and one month in jail in a verdict delivered in absentia. Authorities in Tehran also froze the bank accounts of the filmmaker.
Panahi returned to Iran on 30 March 2026. The director previously faced a one-year prison sentence before this new ruling was handed down.
In 2022, the filmmaker was detained during protests involving a group of other directors. He spent approximately seven months in custody before his release from that arrest.
Restrictions placed on Panahi in 2010, which prohibited him from traveling, speaking to the media, or producing films, were removed in April 2023. Panahi gained international acclaim by winning the Palme d’Or for his movie 'It Was Just an Accident'.
France selected 'It Was Just an Accident' as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
