PCB Launches Four-Team ODI Tournament for 2027 World Cup Preparations

PCB Launches Four-Team ODI Tournament for 2027 World Cup Preparations

Key Takeaways

  • The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a four-team One-Day International (ODI) tournament.
  • The main aim is to identify strong players for the upcoming 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
  • All leading white-ball players will participate, and matches will be televised.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that a four-team One-Day International (ODI) tournament will take place in August. This initiative is part of the country’s preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which is approximately 18 months away.

Pakistan's Director of High Performance, Aaqib Javed, stated that the tournament will be held before the start of the domestic first-class season. He emphasized the importance of beginning preparations early to ensure a strong team for the global event.

The tournament was jointly planned by national selectors and coaching staff. Four balanced teams will be selected, with all leading white-ball players participating. Javed explained that this approach would allow selectors and coaches to assess the country’s talent in a competitive setting.

Each team's playing XI will be decided based on specific roles assigned to players. This will help management evaluate different combinations more effectively. 'The playing XIs will be selected according to each player’s role,' Javed said, adding that this tournament would assist in determining which group of players should form the core of their plans going forward.

All matches will be televised, providing a platform for every player's performance to be closely monitored. This visibility will make it easier for team management to identify the strongest squad for future assignments. 'Every match will be broadcast, everyone’s performances will be visible,' Javed noted.

Improving Pakistan’s position in the ODI rankings before the World Cup is a priority. Javed stressed that the ODI team should be ranked among the top four in the world. Anything below that is unacceptable. The PCB is determined to make significant progress in the rankings.

We have around 18 months until the 2027 World Cup, so this is the right time to begin our preparations.
