Typhoon Bavi to Impact Taiwan and China

Typhoon Bavi to Impact Taiwan and China

Key Takeaways

  • Typhoon Bavi is forecast to make landfall in China’s eastern Fujian province on Saturday evening.
  • Bavi, the largest storm by size since 1987 to hit Taiwan, could be the most powerful typhoon since Super Typhoon Kong-rey in 2024.
  • Authorities across affected regions are urging residents to prepare for potential damage and loss of life.

Typhoon Bavi is currently churning southeast of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean, with its winds easing overnight but still maintaining a formidable presence. The storm, which has been intensifying over open waters, is expected to make landfall in China’s eastern Fujian province on Saturday evening, according to forecasts from the National Meteorological Centre.

Bavi, spanning approximately 1,000 km (621 miles) at its widest point, is set to be the largest storm by size since 1987 to impact Taiwan. Jason Chang, a forecaster with Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, highlighted that such storms are 'fairly rare in recent years,' emphasizing their significance.

The typhoon's potential intensity has raised concerns among meteorologists and authorities. Xiangbo Feng, a research scientist in tropical cyclones at Imperial College London, noted the storm's prolonged intensification over warm ocean waters, which have provided it with significant energy and moisture. 'When Bavi makes landfall or gets close to coastal regions, the damage could be catastrophic,' Feng warned.

As the typhoon approaches, authorities across affected regions are taking proactive measures. In Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te urged people to prepare supplies from food to torches and shared a video teaching how to create an emergency grab bag that could provide life support for three days. The Central Weather Administration has also issued detailed guidelines on preparing for the storm.

In Japan, the meteorological agency is urging residents of Okinawa, the country's southernmost prefecture, to remain vigilant due to potential impacts from Bavi. Jason Nicholls, an international forecasting expert at AccuWeather, stated that while some loss of wind intensity is anticipated starting Thursday, 'Bavi will remain a dangerous storm as it impacts Taiwan and eastern China later Friday into Monday.'

China, the world's second-largest economy, along with its neighbors Japan and Taiwan, are increasingly exposed to destructive weather events linked to climate change. This year is particularly concerning due to the expected emergence of El Nino, which could drive up temperatures and fuel more frequent and intense typhoons.

The potential impact of Bavi has prompted a heightened state of alert across affected regions. Authorities are urging residents to stock up on essential supplies and take necessary precautions. The storm's path remains uncertain, with even small changes in its track potentially leading to significant impacts.

'We should pay much attention to Bavi as it has spent a long time intensifying over the open Pacific, extracting energy from warm ocean and accumulating large amounts of moisture.'
