Scarlett Johansson revealed that her role in the upcoming "The Batman: Part II" pushed her outside of her comfort zone and caused her "a lot of existential angst, for some reason."
During an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" for her upcoming film "Paper Tiger," Johansson stated, "It was very hard to figure out. I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or it was just where I am in my life, but it was just hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it."
Johansson’s involvement in the Robert Pattinson-led feature was confirmed in May via an X post by director Matt Reeves. The post did not reveal any details about her character, providing only a GIF of the actress’ reflection in a car’s rear view mirror from the 2013 film "Under the Skin."
The actress joins a cast of superhero alumni in undisclosed roles, which includes Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry.
Production of the film is currently being led by Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh took over after Reeves, who directed the 2022 "The Batman," temporarily stepped away from the project due to a personal matter.
Reeves previously stated in an interview last year that the sequel would focus more on Bruce Wayne, noting that the first film heavily followed his Batman incarnation. "Once you get past the origin tale, which we didn’t quite do, but we did something that referred to his origins, then you start telling the Rogues Gallery story and that character’s sort of arch," Reeves said. He added, "But I never wanted to lose [Robert Pattinson] at the center of these stories, and so that is really what we set our aim on."
