Actor Hina Bayat has sparked a social media debate following a social experiment she conducted to observe how men react to women's clothing in public. The experiment, which took place in a marketplace, aimed to examine perceptions of harassment and confidence.
During a recent interview shared on Instagram, Bayat explained that the team first sent two girls into a bazaar. One girl wore jeans with a short kurta, while the other wore a traditional shalwar kameez. Bayat recalled that while walking in the bazaar, the girls received stares from multiple men but the men did not engage with them.
The girls returned to the market after 30 minutes with changed appearances. One girl wrapped a dupatta around herself, and the other dressed more modestly. Bayat stated that the response changed during this second round, noting that people began giving remarks along with their staring. She described the shift as very surprising.
The experiment continued with a third outing where one girl wore a niqab and the other wore a regular dupatta styled as a hijab. Bayat explained that men began behaving even more disrespectfully toward the girls during this time. She noted that the team initially struggled to understand why the reactions changed.
After analyzing the observations, Bayat said the team reached a troubling conclusion regarding the mentality of the men. She stated that when men found the girls confident, they avoided them because they believed those were the type of girls who would shout, make a scene, or slap them. However, Bayat said that as soon as the girls were made more modest, the men perceived them as weak and fragile.
Bayat described the findings as a disturbing reflection of an attitude where some men associate modest dressing with weakness rather than respecting women regardless of their appearance.
The experiment received mixed reactions from social media users. Some users agreed with Bayat's observations, arguing the problem lies in men's attitudes. Others argued that confidence cannot be determined by clothing and that women can carry themselves confidently regardless of what they wear.
