Sony reported a sharp spike in net profits for the three months ended September, reaching 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion). This figure represents a 44 percent increase over the 311.4 billion yen ($1.96 billion) reported during the same period in the previous year.

A major driver of this growth was the performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film, which released in July, became the third-highest grossing movie in history by earning $2.52 billion at the global box office. This success provided a significant boost for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which posted earnings of $581 million for the three months ended September, a 527 percent jump from the $93 million reported for the same period in 2025.

While PlayStation game sales for both physical discs and digital downloads generally increased, the company saw a decline in hardware sales. Sony reported selling 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the second quarter, down from the 4 million units sold in Q2 2025. During this period, the Sony-exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine sold 2.4 million units against a reported budget of $300 million. These sales occurred despite a week-long player blackout that took place in August to protest Sony’s plan to ditch discs entirely.

Regarding future hardware, Sony CFO Lin Tao stated that the company is looking at its next generation console. Tao noted that developers are making “solid progress” and that the project is “progressing as scheduled.”
