Sussex woodland recording hits milestone with over 5,500 ancient trees documented

Project recording ancient woodlands in Sussex reached a milestone, documenting more than 5,500 trees across the region. Volunteers have been documenting ancient, veteran, and notable trees throughout a 121-square-mile area spanning from Lewes to Storrington since March 2024.
The total count of recorded trees stands at 5,570. Bob Epsom stated that the 5,570 trees recorded exceeds expectations and marks a significant achievement for the project.
The Lost Woods operates as a collaboration involving the Woodland Trust, Action in Rural Sussex, Sussex Wildlife Trust, and the Small Woods Association. The documentation effort specifically identified 348 ancient trees.
Furthermore, the count included 2,467 notable trees and 2,743 veteran trees. Epsom also noted that the mapping process itself represented only the initial phase of the work.
