  • Selection criteria and responsibility were contradicted by PCB officials.

In a dramatic turn of events during a Test series in England, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has faced intense criticism after recalling seven players and dismissing the head coach and bowling coach. The controversy has highlighted internal contradictions within the board.

Mohsin Naqvi, the newly appointed PCB chairman, had promised a 'surgery' to address the ailing condition of the sport. However, the recent actions have raised questions about the board's commitment to improving the team's performance.

Aaqib Javed, the High Performance Director and national selector, defended the original squad's quality, stating that players were selected based on their previous performance. He emphasized, 'The 17-member team that was formed — I don’t think anyone had any doubt that these players had not gone there on the basis of performance or that there was some deficiency in them.'

Despite this, Javed justified the mid-series recall of seven players, arguing that their form had collapsed and the side was no longer competitive. He said, 'When you come on such a long tour, and your performance is simply not coming, and you are also not able to compete in that way, then making this kind of decision… can only improve your image.'

Naqvi, addressing reporters in London, did not provide clear answers. He stated, 'You get indications about how you are taking your game and how your performance is coming. So there is no harm in making a decision.'

The contradiction is evident in the board's stance. If the squad was assembled on clear merit and previous performance, and if the selectors stand ready to own that selection, then the rapidity with which large parts of it were discarded raises questions about the robustness of the original criteria.

The board's actions have sparked debate about the selection process and the responsibility of the selectors. Javed defended the selection process, saying, 'The selectors, are absolutely ready to take responsibility for that squad.'

However, the decision to recall players mid-series and dismiss key coaching staff has left many questioning the board's approach and the criteria used for selection and retention.

The controversy has put the PCB under scrutiny, with critics arguing that the mid-series intervention was more about image management than genuine improvement. The board's response has been seen as a revealing study in institutional contradiction.
