Pakistan seeks Unesco recognition for Rani Ghat and Banbhore
Archaeological sites in Pakistan, including Rani Ghat and Banbhore, are being considered for Unesco recognition.

Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan has expanded its tentative list of World Heritage sites to include Rani Ghat and Banbhore.
  • The country aims to attract more scholarship, tourism, and conservation funding through Unesco recognition.
  • Pakistan must also ensure proper care and management of its already recognized World Heritage sites.

Pakistan has submitted a request to Unesco to consider Rani Ghat and Banbhore for inclusion in the World Heritage List, following the recent expansion of the country’s tentative list from 25 to 37 properties.

This move comes after the addition of 12 new cultural and heritage sites this year, bringing the total to 37 potential candidates for Unesco recognition.

Rani Ghat and Banbhore are significant as they represent ancient civilisations that existed long before the modern state of Pakistan.

The government is also planning to take Gandhara exhibitions abroad, establish 'Gandhara Corners', and facilitate longer visits to Buddhist sites, indicating a broader strategy to promote Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage.

However, Pakistan has been criticized for treating its archaeological wealth as a niche interest rather than a cultural and economic asset.

While the country is enthusiastic about adding new sites to the World Heritage List, it must also ensure that the six sites already recognized by Unesco are properly cared for.

The World Heritage Committee has acknowledged progress at Mohenjodaro and Makli, but has also highlighted the need for continued conservation efforts and adequate resources.

Federal and provincial authorities are urged to publish conservation plans and budgets for every listed site, maintain specialist teams, and improve visitor facilities, signage, and access.

Tourism revenues should be reinvested in preservation, with local communities given a stake in protecting the sites, to ensure their long-term sustainability.
