Raja Pervaiz Ashraf called for comprehensive electoral reforms through Parliament on 29 October to ensure transparent elections acceptable to all political parties.
The House adopted a resolution to establish a parliamentary committee made up of members from the National Assembly and Senate to create recommendations for these reforms. Ashraf stated that recurring controversies regarding electoral processes have undermined the credibility and dignity of Parliament. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman, affirmed that Parliament should exercise its constitutional authority.
Ashraf and Naveed Qamar went to the opposition chamber to consult with Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the Leader of the Opposition, and senior representatives from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its allied parties. Ashraf urged the PTI to join the proposed committee and submit its own recommendations to improve the electoral process.
Ashraf remains optimistic that opposition leaders will agree to join the committee consisting of National Assembly and Senate members. Ashraf noted that government and opposition parties should cooperate to introduce reforms in the larger national interest.
