The government eliminated 2,007 technical positions within the National Highways and Motorway Police on 29 October. Parliamentary Secretary for Communications Gul Asghar Khan said the Ministry of Communications removed these roles, which included plumbers and electricians, after receiving federal orders to scrap dying cadres.
Khan stated that the Cabinet and the Establishment Division made the final decision to remove the positions. A rightsizing committee, established by the prime minister, recommended cutting these cadres and outsourcing services to lower the federal government's expenses.
The secretary noted that the ministry lacked the authority to reverse the Cabinet's directive independently. Khan explained that the rightsizing policy applies to all federal ministries, and he added that approximately 4,000 posts were also cut from the Pakistan Post Office.
Staff members who remain may still receive promotions under current policies once they finish their required service periods. Neelam said the technical staff had served in these cadres for a long time and suggested the matter requires discussion at the Cabinet level.
