Ancient Denisovan Tools Unearthed in Chinese Cave
Hominin teeth and artefacts unearthed in Bianfu cave, Yunnan province, China.

Key Takeaways

  • Archaeologists discovered Denisovan tools in Bianfu cave in Yunnan province, China.
  • This is the first evidence of Denisovans in this region, providing insights into their technology and lifestyle.
  • The discovery includes 18 layers of sediment with artefacts, four intact hominin teeth, and over 64,000 bone fragments.

Archaeologists have uncovered a significant site in China that provides new insights into the Denisovans, a mysterious group of ancient humans. The discovery, made in Bianfu cave in Yunnan province, is the first evidence of Denisovans in this region and one of the few known sites with artefacts that can reveal their way of life.

The site, which has been heavily quarried, yielded 18 layers of sediment, of which 10 contained artefacts made by hominins. Among these artefacts, four intact hominin teeth were found, along with over 64,000 bone fragments. This extensive collection offers a rare glimpse into the Denisovans' technology and subsistence strategy.

Hao Li, an archaeologist at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research in Beijing, led the excavation. He and his team conducted a rescue excavation in 2019 after local workers discovered animal fossils, which prompted further investigation.

The researchers identified 22 potential hominin remains, of which three were confirmed to be from Denisovans through molecular analysis. However, attempts to extract DNA from these bones were unsuccessful due to the warm climate and the age of the fossils.

Despite the lack of DNA, the team managed to obtain proteins from the bones and teeth. These protein variants confirmed the Denisovan origin of the remains, providing crucial information about their genetic makeup.

Bence Viola, an archaeologist at the University of Toronto, noted that this is the third site where all elements of Denisovan life have been found, alongside Denisova cave in Siberia and Baishiya Karst cave on the Tibetan plateau.

The discovery of these tools and artefacts in Bianfu cave is significant as it offers the first evidence of Denisovans in this region, providing insights into their technology and subsistence strategy. This site is one of the few where we have human remains, lithics, fauna, and environmental context, making it invaluable for understanding these ancient humans.

The findings from Bianfu cave are part of a broader effort to uncover more about the Denisovans, a group of ancient humans that lived in East Asia within the past few hundred thousand years. While their remains have been found in other locations, the context and artefacts from this site provide a unique opportunity to study their way of life.
