Tesla adds 'emergency drive away' feature after Idaho Supercharger shooting

Tesla introduced an 'emergency drive away' feature for vehicles while they are charging, following a mass shooting at a Supercharger location in Idaho in August. The shooting in Idaho resulted in four fatalities and seven injuries.
This new function permits vehicle owners to override the charging lock and depart while the charging handle remains attached. Activating the drive mode triggers an emergency drive away alert, which requires the driver to confirm the action.
Currently, the feature's availability is restricted to the United States. A Tesla owner who was charging was wounded by a 24-year-old gunman during the incident.
Separately, a startup named EVject built a breakaway adapter for Tesla Superchargers in 2024. Tesla subsequently initiated legal action against EVject after testing revealed the adapter could overheat.
