Pop star Grimes will appear in the upcoming AI-generated sci-fi film Gods Don’t Give Gifts, which is scheduled to release in theaters on December 4th. The project is being marketed as the first AI film to come to theaters and serves as a test case for the commercial potential of the technology.

Grimes will provide both her likeness and her vocal performance for the movie. AI studio Fable, the production company, stated in a press release that casting the likeness of an actor with their spoken vocal performance will become more common with animated films using AI, noting that audiences will see actors, athletes, and musicians giving vocal performances with their likeness in films.

The film is directed by Jack London, who is better known by the online handle Gossip Goblin. It is an anthology set in a future where bodies are disposable and consciousness has been commoditized. The movie depicts what happens when four interconnected stories collide with the horrifying consequences of humanity’s attempt to transcend the flesh.

The reporter notes that these themes align with Grimes' previous interests in artificial intelligence and transhumanism. This film is not her only AI project, as she is also working on an AI-themed album titled Psy Opera.

While there has been significant hype regarding AI in Hollywood, the reporter observes that there has not yet been a project proving the technology is a vital storytelling tool, citing previous examples like two different takes on The Odyssey—one of which was made with Elon Musk’s Grok—as having left plenty to be desired.
