Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced on X that the company will launch its first "AI-native" product next month. While the CEO did not provide specific details regarding the device's identity, he confirmed that the product will not feature a screen.
Pei described the upcoming release as a "tool" that maintains the "personality and care" associated with Nothing products. He stated that the device "couldn’t have been an app." To accompany the announcement, Pei shared an image featuring the "NOTHING(R)" logo in the top left corner, above an ambiguous black rounded corner.
The announcement follows a period of speculation regarding the company's direction. Last month, a rumor claimed Nothing is planning to launch two pairs of AI smart glasses, including one without cameras, and an earlier rumor said it’s “repositioning itself as an AI-first company” with a shift to AI accessories.
Pei noted that the technology industry is currently searching for an "iPhone moment" for artificial intelligence, citing examples such as "the pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion, some magical consumer device that makes AI part of everyone’s life." However, Pei stated that "Looking for the iPhone of AI today is a dead end."
The upcoming Nothing device will not be the first screen-free AI gadget on the market, following existing products like the Humane AI pin, the Friend, and AI stuffed animals. Additionally, reports indicate that OpenAI is working on an AI smart speaker in collaboration with Jony Ive.
