PTA to Halve eSIM Prices in Pakistan

PTA to Halve eSIM Prices in Pakistan

Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is reducing eSIM prices by up to 50 percent.
  • The current fee of Rs. 2,000 will be lowered to Rs. 1,500-1,000 to boost adoption.
  • Higher taxes on mobile phones could hinder the use of 5G services in Pakistan.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is implementing a significant reduction in eSIM prices, aiming to make these devices more accessible to consumers. According to PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman, discussions with mobile operators are underway to cut the current fee of Rs. 2,000 by up to 50 percent, bringing it down to between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 1,000.

The reduction is part of a broader strategy to encourage the adoption of eSIM technology in Pakistan. The PTA chairman highlighted that increased demand would eventually lead to further price reductions, making these devices more affordable for a wider range of users.

During his briefing with the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, Major General Rehman also addressed concerns regarding taxes on mobile phones. He clarified that the PTA does not impose taxes on such devices; this responsibility lies with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The chairman informed the committee that approximately 25 million mobile phones are manufactured annually in Pakistan, while imported devices like Samsung and Apple products are subject to applicable taxes. This distinction is crucial as it affects the overall cost structure for consumers.

Major General Rehman emphasized that higher taxes on mobile phones could create obstacles to the adoption and wider use of 5G services in Pakistan. He warned that such taxes might deter users from upgrading their devices, thereby limiting the potential benefits of 5G technology.

The reduction in eSIM prices is expected to have a positive impact on both consumers and service providers. Lower costs could lead to increased usage of these devices, which are particularly useful for those who frequently travel or require multiple SIM cards without physical SIMs.

While the exact timeline for implementing the price reductions has not been specified, the PTA remains committed to making eSIM technology more accessible. The chairman stated that discussions with mobile operators are ongoing and that the final decision will be based on mutual agreement.
