Tajikistan Expands Forest Cover by Over 3,000 Hectares

Key Takeaways

  • Tajikistan has restored and expanded over 3,000 hectares of forests.
  • 1,230.4 hectares were newly planted with various tree species.
  • Restoration activities covered 1,874.4 hectares.

In the first half of 2026, Tajikistan has undertaken significant forest restoration and expansion efforts, covering an area of over 3,000 hectares. According to Deputy Director of the Forestry Agency Davlatali Sharifzoda, these initiatives have seen the planting of new forests on 1,230.4 hectares.

The restoration activities were equally extensive, with 1,874.4 hectares being revitalized through various conservation measures. Additionally, 193.5 hectares were planted with diverse tree species including rosehip, pistachio, and walnut trees, aiming to enhance biodiversity and ecological resilience in the region.

These efforts are part of a broader national strategy aimed at combating deforestation and promoting sustainable land use practices. The Forestry Agency has emphasized the importance of these projects not only for environmental sustainability but also for economic benefits such as improved soil health and increased agricultural productivity.

Davlatali Sharifzoda highlighted that the planting of specific tree species, like rosehip and pistachio, is crucial for their potential to provide both ecological and economic advantages. Rosehip, in particular, has medicinal properties and can be used in various industries, while pistachios are a valuable cash crop.

The expansion of forest cover is expected to contribute significantly to Tajikistan’s carbon sequestration efforts and support local communities by providing resources and employment opportunities within the forestry sector. The government plans to continue these initiatives with the aim of restoring and enhancing the country's natural landscapes.

These developments come at a time when environmental conservation has become increasingly important globally, with many countries focusing on reforestation as part of their climate change mitigation strategies. Tajikistan’s efforts align with international goals and could serve as an example for other nations facing similar challenges.
