Pakistan Commences Major Skardu Airport Expansion Project

Pakistan Commences Major Skardu Airport Expansion Project

Key Takeaways

  • The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has initiated a Rs. 900 million expansion project at Skardu International Airport.
  • The project aims to enhance passenger facilities and support the growing tourism sector in Gilgit-Baltistan.
  • Key upgrades include an expanded terminal building, increased check-in counters, and improved parking capacity.

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a significant Rs. 900 million expansion project at Skardu International Airport to bolster passenger facilities and support the burgeoning tourism industry in Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan, the project will substantially upgrade the airport’s infrastructure, including a larger terminal building, expanded passenger lounges, additional check-in counters, increased parking capacity, and new cargo facilities. These improvements are designed to meet rising passenger demand and prepare for potential future international operations.

The expansion involves expanding the terminal building from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet, tripling the departure lounge capacity from 300 to 900 passengers, doubling the arrival lounge space from 80 to 200 passengers, and increasing the number of check-in counters from six to ten. The airport’s parking capacity will also triple, growing from 200 to 600 vehicles.

Additionally, the project includes the construction of a modern cargo office block, which is expected to enhance cargo handling capabilities and support commercial activity in the region. PAA officials believe that these upgrades will attract more domestic and international flights, making Skardu more accessible for tourists and further strengthening Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism industry.

Speaking about the project's progress, Saifullah Khan stated, 'Construction is currently in its initial phase, with line marking work already underway before major development activities begin.'

The PAA expects that the upgraded airport will facilitate smoother operations during peak travel periods and provide better services to passengers. The expansion is part of a broader strategy to improve air connectivity and tourism infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan.

With these enhancements, Skardu International Airport aims to become a more attractive destination for both domestic and international travelers, contributing significantly to the region’s economic growth through increased tourist arrivals and commercial activities.
