Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif undertook a day-long visit to Doha, accompanied by former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif and other senior officials, to convey personal condolences on behalf of Pakistan’s government and people. The delegation visited the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and expressed heartfelt sympathy over the passing of the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, was a pivotal figure in transforming the nation into a regional powerhouse. The Amiri Diwan, Qatar’s top government body, announced his death on Sunday morning at the age of 74.

During their visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad's visionary leadership and contributions to regional peace and development. He recalled the late emir’s warmth towards Pakistan and expressed gratitude for the special gesture of travelling to Doha to offer condolences.

The Qatari Emir thanked the Pakistani delegation for their personal visit, describing it as a reflection of the deep-rooted fraternal bonds between the two countries. The current Emir highlighted the enduring relationship between Qatar and Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of mutual support during times of grief.

Upon returning to Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz announced that July 13, 2026, would be observed as a day of mourning across the country in honor of Sheikh Hamad. A notification was issued by the Cabinet Division stating, 'This decision has been taken by the Government of Pakistan and its people as an expression of solidarity and condolences with the royal family, government, and people of Qatar.'

The national flag would fly at half-mast throughout the country to mark the day of mourning. This gesture underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Qatar, reflecting the deep-rooted fraternal bonds shared by both nations.

Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al Thani, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence, received the Pakistani delegation at Doha Airport upon their arrival. This official reception highlighted the importance of the visit and the close relationship between the two countries.
