BYD’s 0 Million Plant Near Completion in Pakistan

Key Takeaways

  • Chinese auto giant BYD's $150 million assembly plant in Gharo, Sindh, is nearing completion.
  • The facility will produce the country's first locally assembled BYD vehicle by July or August 2026.
  • Annual production capacity of approximately 25,000 vehicles is expected once operational.

Chinese automotive giant BYD has announced that its $150 million assembly plant in Gharo, Sindh, Pakistan, is now in the final stages of construction. The facility, developed under a strategic collaboration with local partner Mega Motor Company (MMC), aims to produce the country's first locally assembled BYD vehicle by July or August 2026.

Danish Khaliq, Vice President Sales & Strategy at BYD Pakistan – MMC, stated that the project is progressing strongly and emphasized the company’s commitment to Pakistan’s automotive sector. 'Construction of our purpose-built NEV assembly facility in Gharo is now in its final stages,' he said, adding that equipment installation and commissioning are currently underway.

The plant, which has been under development for less than two years from groundbreaking, will have an annual production capacity of approximately 25,000 vehicles. This aligns with the growing demand for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in Pakistan, particularly following recent increases in fuel prices.

Khaliq further explained that securing a shipment of more than 2,000 EVs through a roll-on/roll-off vessel reflects increasing consumer confidence in BYD vehicles. 'This development is a strong reflection of the growing demand for BYD vehicles in Pakistan and the confidence customers have placed in the brand,' he noted.

Despite global competition for vehicle allocations, Mega Motor Company secured this shipment to support customer deliveries while ensuring adequate vehicle availability across its dealer network. 'Working closely with the company, Mega Motor Company secured its largest shipment to date, enabling us to accelerate deliveries to our customers and meet growing demand for NEVs,' Khaliq added.

The official also highlighted that consumer interest in NEVs has been steadily increasing over the past year as buyers consider the total cost of ownership. 'Consumers are increasingly recognising the value proposition of BYD’s New Energy Vehicles, which combine advanced technology, safety, performance, and efficiency,' he said.

Once operational, the facility will play a significant role in deepening localisation efforts within Pakistan's automotive industry. The project is seen as one of the fastest automotive manufacturing initiatives of its scale in the country, underscoring BYD’s commitment to supporting sustainable transportation solutions.

'Yes, the project continues to make strong progress, and we remain focused on bringing Pakistan's first locally assembled BYD vehicle to market at the earliest.'
