Peacock gains record subscribers thanks to World Cup coverage

Key Takeaways

  • Comcast's streaming service Peacock added two million new subscribers in the April-June quarter.
  • The World Cup, aired live in Spanish by Telemundo, contributed significantly to increased viewership.
  • Revenue for the period reached approximately $1.9 billion, with earnings at $189 million.

Peacock, a streaming service under Comcast and part of NBC's portfolio, has seen a significant surge in subscribers following its coverage of the World Cup. According to a quarterly summary released by Comcast on Thursday, Peacock gained an additional two million subscribers during the April-June quarter, bringing its total subscriber base to 48 million.

The event, hosted in North America this year, provided prime-time content that boosted viewership numbers to record levels for all affiliates. The service aired live Spanish-language coverage of the World Cup by Telemundo, which helped attract a broader audience and contributed to the growth in subscribers.

In addition to subscriber gains, Peacock also reported an increase in revenue to approximately $1.9 billion during the quarter, with earnings reaching $189 million. Co-CEO Mike Cavanaugh expressed confidence that the service's involvement in distributing major sports programming such as the NFL, MLB, NBA, Olympics, and Premier League will continue to provide stability.

Cavanaugh stated, 'In six years, it’s gotten to incredible scale at a pace that we’re very proud of and very much dovetails with the strategy for how we build and program NBC itself.' This growth is seen as a testament to Peacock's strategic positioning within Comcast's broader media ecosystem.

The success of Peacock during the World Cup period has not only boosted its subscriber numbers but also highlighted the potential of streaming services in capturing viewers' attention through high-profile sporting events. The service’s ability to leverage live coverage and prime-time slots effectively underscores its growing importance in the competitive landscape of digital entertainment.

While Co-CEO Mike Cavanaugh acknowledged that profitability may still vary quarter to quarter, he remains optimistic about Peacock's future prospects. 'We’re very much confident that this involvement will continue to provide stability,' he added.
