UBL Launches Major Development Initiatives in Agriculture, Education and Financial Markets

Key Takeaways

  • United Bank Limited (UBL) has committed PKR 40 billion towards three national development initiatives.
  • The bank is establishing an agricultural subsidiary to support farmers through research, technology, and financing.
  • UBL is also investing PKR 20 billion in a new university to enhance educational standards.

United Bank Limited (UBL), Pakistan's largest bank by deposits, has announced three significant national development initiatives totaling up to PKR 40 billion. These projects aim to bolster the country’s agricultural sector, education system, and financial stability.

The first initiative involves UBL establishing a dedicated agricultural subsidiary with an investment of up to PKR 8 billion. The subsidiary will focus on creating an integrated ecosystem for farmers by providing research support, technology-driven advisory services, timely access to high-quality inputs, affordable financing, market access, trade facilitation, and modern logistics solutions.

Muhammad Jawaid Iqbal, President & CEO of UBL, stated: 'Our agricultural platform seeks to empower farmers with knowledge, financing, technology, and market access. By combining these elements on a single platform, we aim to transform the agricultural value chain and improve farm incomes.'

The second initiative is an investment of PKR 10 billion towards establishing a university in Pakistan, which will be matched by an equal contribution from the Bestway Foundation, bringing the total investment up to PKR 20 billion. The proposed institution aims to become a centre of excellence for teaching, research, innovation, and leadership development.

Speaking on the occasion, Iqbal added: 'This university will help shape future leaders and innovators who can compete with the best universities globally while contributing meaningfully to Pakistan’s future.'

The third initiative involves UBL committing up to PKR 22 billion to provide necessary capital to Khushhali Microfinance Bank (KMBL). KMBL had faced significant financial challenges, including negative equity of PKR 16.15 billion as on December 31, 2025. This investment aims to strengthen the financial markets and stability in Pakistan.

Iqbal further elaborated: 'Our commitment to these initiatives reflects UBL’s unwavering belief that long-term national progress requires sustained investment in people, institutions, and productive sectors of the economy.'

These initiatives collectively demonstrate UBL's conviction that building a sustainable future for Pakistan necessitates strategic investments across multiple critical areas. By focusing on agriculture, education, and financial stability, UBL is positioning itself as a key player in shaping Pakistan’s long-term development.

Our agricultural platform seeks to empower farmers with knowledge, financing, technology, and market access.
