The Jinnah Institute of Cardiology in Lahore, built for Rs17 billion, has still not become fully operational six weeks after its inauguration by the Punjab chief minister.
Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafiq stated that the institute may take another three weeks to become fully functional.
According to sources, no angiography, angioplasty or bypass surgery has yet been performed at the hospital, and patients arriving there are being referred to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology.
The 250-bed facility is currently running only outpatient and emergency services, while indoor services have not started yet.
Sources added that several important posts at the hospital are still vacant, and most senior cardiologists and cardiac surgeons have not yet joined.
They said many departments are working without heads, which has delayed the start of full cardiac procedures.
Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafiq said efforts would be made to start angiography at the institute from next week.
He said patients would soon begin receiving treatment at the facility, and a team of expert surgeons is being formed to begin life-saving procedures.
