The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has confirmed the opening date for the new Kashmir Chowk underpass, which is expected to be completed within a month. The project, aimed at easing traffic congestion at Kashmir Chowk, where around 107,000 vehicles pass daily, is set to significantly improve traffic flow in the area.
According to a CDA spokesperson, the underpass will be constructed at a cost of Rs1.4 billion, a reduction from the initial estimate of Rs1.6 billion. The project will feature separate underpasses for traffic from the Serena side and vehicles traveling from Faizabad towards Murree, along with four new slip roads to enhance traffic movement.
The scheme also includes the expansion of around five acres of land for road infrastructure, which will be integrated with the planned expansion of lanes on the Islamabad Expressway. This integration is expected to reduce travel time between Islamabad and Rawalpindi to approximately 16 to 18 minutes.
The spokesperson further stated that the project will provide a much-needed relief to commuters, particularly during peak hours, where traffic delays are common. The underpass is designed to improve the overall traffic management system in the area, making it easier for vehicles to navigate through Kashmir Chowk.
The CDA has emphasized the importance of this project in addressing the growing traffic challenges in Islamabad. The spokesperson noted that the project cost has been optimized through careful planning, ensuring that the project remains within budget while delivering the necessary infrastructure improvements.
Once completed, the underpass will not only ease congestion but also enhance the safety and efficiency of the road network in the area. The project is expected to benefit a large number of daily commuters and residents who rely on this junction for their daily travel needs.
