The federal and provincial governments are collaborating on the construction of several dams to expand the country's water storage capacity.
Parliamentary Secretary for Water Resources Rana Ansar said the government is taking measures to complete the Diamer Bhasha Dam, a major national water project. Ansar stated that construction is moving forward following the finalisation of the PC-I and various project phases.
The Diamer Bhasha Dam is described by Ansar as a significant project for increasing water storage, ranking only after the Tarbela Dam. A National Water Policy was previously approved by the Council of Common Interests in 2018. The federal government and the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) were assigned the task of installing a telemetry system at 27 specific sites.
Work on the telemetry system is being conducted jointly by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and the Indus River System Authority. Preparations for the installation are currently underway at various sites. The installation process involves consultation with the provinces and coordination with their respective Irrigation Departments.
Ansar promised to provide the list of 27 locations to the member of the National Assembly. The list of sites will include specific details for Chashma Link, Sindh Barrage, and Taunsa.
