Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, called for the creation of an autonomous Pakistan Tourism Authority on Thursday. Speaking during a meeting with Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Iqbal stressed that an effective national institutional framework is necessary to promote tourism and improve coordination among the provinces.

According to a press release from the Planning Ministry, the meeting focused on establishing national-level institutions for both tourism and sports. Iqbal stated that the proposed Pakistan Tourism Authority should include representation from all four provinces and serve as a coordinating body for tourism activities nationwide.

Iqbal argued that Pakistan should be promoted internationally as a unified tourist destination, noting that the country possesses abundant tourism resources and natural beauty. He stated that tapping into this potential requires a comprehensive strategy and effective institutional collaboration.

During the session, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Tourism, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, provided a briefing on tourism initiatives and achievements for the 2025-26 period. Khan informed the participants that the Pakistan Tourism, Sports and Family Festival 2026 is scheduled to take place in Islamabad on November 6, 7, and 8.

Khan noted that recreational and tourism activities would be held at various locations throughout the federal capital, including Lake View Park. He further stated that the private sector has already secured sponsorships to help organize the festival.
