Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Qatar on Monday for a one-day visit to offer condolences over the death of the country’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced that Nawaz Sharif, PML-N President and former prime minister, accompanied Shehbaz during his trip.

During his stay in Qatar, PM Shehbaz is scheduled to meet with the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The visit reflects the longstanding fraternal relations between Pakistan and Qatar, as well as the close ties between their respective royal families and governments.

The PMO stated that the prime minister’s journey underscores the enduring bonds between the two nations, which have been maintained over several decades. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar are also part of the delegation accompanying Shehbaz on this visit.

Qatar observed a period of mourning following the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who led the country from 1995 to 2013. He was widely recognized for his role in modernizing Qatar and overseeing significant economic growth during his tenure.

Pakistan has declared today as a day of mourning, with the national flag flying at half-mast across the country. The PMO shared this information through social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of the visit to Qatar.

The visit comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, which have reportedly brought peace efforts by mediators such as Pakistan and Qatar back into question. However, the primary focus of Shehbaz’s trip is to extend condolences and strengthen bilateral ties.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was a key figure in shaping modern Qatar, and his passing has been mourned widely both within the country and internationally. The visit by PM Shehbaz reflects Pakistan's commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with its regional partners.
