Karachi Opens Key Sections of University Road

Karachi Opens Key Sections of University Road

Key Takeaways

  • Several key sections of University Road in Karachi have been reopened to traffic.
  • The road improvements are expected to reduce congestion and improve overall traffic flow.
  • Construction on the remaining stretch is ongoing, with more sections set to open soon.

Commuters in Karachi can now expect smoother travel as several key sections of University Road have been reopened. According to officials from the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), the newly completed carriageways between Hassan Square and Jail Road, along with the road connecting Jail Road to Mazar-e-Quaid, are now open in both directions.

The latest openings mark significant progress on a long-running road improvement project that has faced prolonged disruptions due to construction work. The Safari Park to NIPA section had already been completed and opened earlier this year, while construction continues on the remaining stretch between Safora and Mazar-e-Quaid.

During a visit to the project in April 2026, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab were briefed by FWO officials on the progress. The organization has been tasked with completing the section from Islamia College to the Meteorological Department, with work currently underway.

Officials have expressed confidence that construction will continue at an accelerated pace, with more sections expected to be completed and opened in the coming months. The latest openings are anticipated to reduce congestion on surrounding roads and improve overall traffic movement in central Karachi.

The rehabilitation project resumed after FWO officially took over the long-delayed corridor. The organization has been working diligently to ensure that the road is completed as per the planned timeline, with a focus on delivering improved infrastructure for the city’s residents and commuters.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated, 'We are pleased to see progress in this critical project. The reopening of these sections will significantly enhance connectivity and reduce travel time for our citizens.'

The FWO officials added, 'We remain committed to completing the remaining stretch at a faster pace to ensure that all sections of University Road are operational as soon as possible.'
