Karachi Mayor Restores 35-Year-Old Water Pumping Station

Key Takeaways

  • Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the Noor Mohammad Baloch Pumping Station.
  • The facility, inactive for decades, now serves over 300,000 residents in Saddar Town and Lyari Town.
  • Revival aims to improve water supply reliability in several localities including Ranchore Line and Kharadar.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has successfully revived the Noor Mohammad Baloch Pumping Station, which had been inactive for 35 years. The facility, established in 1991 by the then Mayor but never completed and operationalised, was restored following complaints from local representatives and community members.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Wahab highlighted that previous administrations failed to complete the project despite repeated promises. He emphasized that ensuring access to clean drinking water remains a top priority for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

The pumping station now serves more than 300,000 residents in Saddar Town, Lyari Town, and surrounding areas, including localities such as Ranchore Line, Kharadar, Mithadar, Jodia Bazaar, Bombay Bazaar, Bhimpura, SIUT, Civil Hospital, and multiple union councils. The mayor’s efforts are expected to provide a more reliable water supply to these communities.

In his tweet, Mayor Wahab stated: 'The areas of Kharadar, Meethadar, Ranchor Line & other parts of old city…' This tweet underscores the significant impact of the project on the daily lives of Karachi residents. The mayor’s commitment to addressing the city's water issues is evident in his continued efforts to strengthen the water supply network and rehabilitate aging infrastructure.

The revival of this pumping station marks a step forward in improving the water supply system in Karachi, which has long struggled with inadequate and unreliable water services. Mayor Wahab’s actions reflect a renewed focus on addressing the needs of the city's residents and ensuring they have access to clean drinking water.

According to the mayor, the KWSC is also implementing long-term solutions to address the city’s water issues. These efforts include strengthening the water supply network and rehabilitating aging infrastructure. The restoration of the Noor Mohammad Baloch Pumping Station is part of a broader strategy to improve water management in Karachi.

The successful revival of this pumping station serves as an example of how local government initiatives can make a tangible difference in the lives of residents. It highlights the importance of sustained efforts and community engagement in addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges.
