  • The visit includes discussions on regional dynamics and energy cooperation.
  • Rubio will also engage in bilateral engagements with officials from Central Asian countries.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to embark on a five-day trip to India and Uzbekistan, beginning on Saturday. The State Department announced the visit, which will see Rubio travel to Samarkand in Uzbekistan and Mumbai and Jamnagar in India.

In India, Rubio will meet with government officials to discuss regional and global dynamics, and explore prospects for enhanced energy cooperation. This visit comes at a time when long-standing efforts to finalize a bilateral trade agreement between the two nations have stalled.

The strained relationship between the US and India has been marked by several issues, including President Donald Trump's claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and a US military attack on a ship off Oman that killed three Indian seafarers. New Delhi has also expressed concerns over US legislation that allows for the imposition of tariffs on countries purchasing Russian energy, part of Washington's efforts to pressure Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

Despite these tensions, India's energy imports from Russia have surged, particularly since the supply shock following the US-Israeli war on Iran. The State Department noted that India only briefly reduced its purchases from Russia in early 2026 but have since increased them significantly.

The visit also coincides with ongoing protests in India over the removal of 130 million voters from electoral rolls. However, Washington has not commented on these demonstrations.

In Uzbekistan, Rubio will participate in bilateral engagements with officials from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, he will lead a delegation of over 200 business leaders, focusing on fostering economic ties and energy cooperation in the region.

The State Department emphasized that the trip aims to strengthen US-India and US-Uzbekistan relations, particularly in the areas of energy and regional stability. The visit is expected to lay the groundwork for future collaboration and dialogue between the nations.
