Margaret Hamilton dies at 90; pioneers' legacy honoured by MIT

Margaret Hamilton passed away at the age of 90, according to MIT. During the Apollo 11 mission, the spacecraft encountered an onboard computer alarm just before reaching the Moon's surface.
Hamilton stated that the software proved capable of more than just reporting a hardware issue; it actively compensated by restarting and re-establishing critical tasks, as the error detection and recovery mechanisms provided aid. Barack Obama presented Margaret Hamilton with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Obama remarked, “Our astronauts didn’t have much time, but thankfully they had Margaret Hamilton.” The Guardian noted that Hamilton was drawn to the field because, “I was attracted both by the sheer idea and the fact that it had never been done before. I was the first programmer to join and the first woman they hired.”
MIT confirmed that Hamilton is survived by a daughter, a son-in-law, two grandsons, and four great-grandchildren.
“Our astronauts didn’t have much time, but thankfully they had Margaret Hamilton,” said Barack Obama.
