Pakistan has become part of a multinational maritime defence alliance, joining 13 other countries in supporting Saudi Arabia's initiative. The coalition is designed to protect key strategic waterways including the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden from increasing security threats.

The alliance was discussed at a high-level meeting hosted by the Saudi Ministry of Defense on Thursday, attended by military representatives from 43 countries, including Pakistan. A total of 51 countries and organizations were invited to participate in the discussions.

Following the meeting, Saudi Arabia, along with Pakistan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia issued a joint statement supporting the proposed alliance. The statement endorsed the agreed foundational arrangements for the coalition.

The primary objective of the alliance is to counter attacks on commercial ships, oil tankers, and maritime infrastructure that threaten freedom of navigation, global supply chains, energy security, and international trade. Participants reviewed draft documents including the charter, organizational structure, command-and-control arrangements, and operational mechanisms.

Military planners from countries seeking membership will now work to finalize these documents before the alliance is formally launched. Saudi Arabia has described the coalition as an open international defence initiative, inviting other countries sharing its objectives to join after completing their respective national procedures.

The development comes amid growing international concern over threats to shipping in the Red Sea and adjoining waterways, which carry a significant share of global energy supplies and commercial trade. The meeting concluded with a commitment to accelerate the alliance's establishment and develop a coordinated mechanism capable of deterring maritime threats and safeguarding international navigation and trade.

Pakistan’s participation is seen as a strategic move to enhance its regional security posture and align with Saudi Arabia’s broader defense initiatives in the region.
