Norway coach warns of player health concerns ahead of England clash

Norway coach warns of player health concerns ahead of England clash

Key Takeaways

  • Norway coach Stale Solbakken reports some players are unwell before World Cup quarter-final.
  • Striker Jorgen Strand Larsen is among those dealing with health issues, including a fever and coughing.
  • Solbakken attributes the health concerns to the pressure of the World Cup experience.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken has expressed concerns over the health of some players in his squad as they prepare for their World Cup quarter-final against England on Saturday. Speaking to reporters, Solbakken highlighted that striker Jorgen Strand Larsen is one of those dealing with health issues, including a fever and coughing.

Solbakken stated, 'We’ve really only had Jorgen who has had a fever, but then there’s been a bit of coughing and rasping scattered throughout.' He added, 'But there’s air conditioning, flights, changing rooms and all that. There’s 50 people (in Norway’s travelling party), so it would be strange if something or other didn’t crop up.'

The coach also mentioned that midfielder Marcus Holmgren Pedersen missed the 2-1 win over Brazil in the round of 16 due to illness, though Solbakken thought the pressure of the World Cup experience may have affected him. 'I think, without being a doctor, that it’s a combination of the boy being young, he’s come to the World Cup and thought, “I’m going to be a backup for Julian (Ryerson),” he’s had two games and played great,' Solbakken explained.

Solbakken further elaborated on the challenges his team faces. 'He’s got a lot of stimulation, his head is full, his body is full of impressions, and then the system collapses a bit.' He acknowledged that with 50 people in their travelling party, it would be unusual if no one experienced health issues.

The coach's concerns come as Norway prepares to face England in what could be a crucial match. The pressure of the World Cup experience is evident, with players dealing with both physical and mental fatigue. Solbakken’s comments highlight the challenges faced by teams as they navigate through the tournament.

In other developments, Switzerland secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Colombia on penalties. Their victory sets up an intriguing match-up against Norway for a spot in the semi-finals. The Swiss coach will be hoping his team remains healthy and focused ahead of the next round.

As the World Cup continues to unfold, teams are facing not only the physical demands of the tournament but also the mental strain. For Norway, ensuring their players remain fit and ready for the challenge against England is a key priority.
