SSGC confirms gas odor due to testing in Karachi
Residents of Karachi check for the source of an unusually strong gas smell near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road.

Key Takeaways

  • SSGC reports unusual gas smell caused by odorization plant testing.
  • Testing involved higher-than-normal addition of odorant for new pipeline commissioning.
  • No gas leakage reported; SSGC advises consumers not to panic.

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has confirmed that an unusually strong gas smell in parts of Karachi, particularly near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road, is due to testing of its odorization plants. The company stated that the testing process involved temporarily adding a higher quantity of odorant — the substance used to give natural gas its distinctive smell — resulting in stronger-than-usual odour in some locations.

According to SSGC, all system pressures remained normal during the testing and no gas leakage was reported. The company urged consumers not to panic, stating that the smell was solely due to the temporary increase in odorant levels during the testing process.

SSGC clarified that this incident is a result of the commissioning of a new gas pipeline and emphasized that routine activities should continue as normal. The company reassured the public that such tests are necessary for ensuring the safety and efficiency of the gas distribution network.

The unusual odor has caused concern among residents in affected areas, but SSGC maintained that there is no cause for alarm. They advised consumers to remain calm and not take any unnecessary actions as a result of the temporary increase in odorant levels.

SSGC emphasized the importance of such testing procedures during the commissioning phase of new pipelines. These tests are crucial for identifying potential issues early on, ensuring smooth operation once the pipeline is fully operational.
