Director Taika Waititi defended his film Klara and the Sun on social media following a mixed reception from reviewers.

The movie currently holds a 28% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, while it maintains a 78% audience score.

Waititi called for people to spare a thought for critics this Halloween, saying, "So this Halloween, let’s spare a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t achieve their dreams of becoming artists, and thus became critics. The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit. Irrelevant. Out of touch. Obsolete. In the bin." The film is set in a dystopian future where an obsolete companion android, played by Jenna Ortega, attempts to form a bond with her new owner, a young sick girl named Josie.

Ortega remarked that the idea of the film becoming a 'numbers thing' would send her into a 'psychosis of some sort'. Sony Pictures scaled back its theatrical footprint for the release, showing the film in 880 locations. The production earned $720,000 and reached number 15 on the charts.

The project originated from a 2021 timeframe.
