Filmmakers from Nippon Cinema Now presented their latest projects at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). Program selector Ichiyama chose Ueda for the festival because of the vertical format used in Earthlings in Love.
The film serves as an adaptation of a 30-episode microdrama series created specifically for social media platforms. Ueda stated that the production budget for Earthlings in Love was equal to that of a standard independent film.
Saito premiered the feature film Kefi, which explores the lives of three sisters following the death of their father. A sponsor provided a specific theme for Kefi, though Saito claimed the original inspiration was maternal love.
The production of Chihiro | Akemi features a house located in eastern Hokkaido. Carlos Reygadas told Natori, “Your film is crazy. What’s going on here?”
Natori expressed a desire to collaborate with Reygadas on a joint project between Japan and Mexico. Yaza collaborated with cinematographer Kitagawa Yoshio on their work.
