New York’s Town Hall will host a staged reading of a movie script for Difficult People on 3 November 2026. Julie Klausner co-wrote the screenplay alongside Alex Scordelis.
Universal commissioned the script four years ago, though the film was never produced. The original series aired for three seasons on Hulu between 2015 and 2017 after USA originally purchased the property.
Billy Eichner will portray Billy in the reading, while Andrea Martin takes the role of Marilyn. James Urbaniak and Gabourey Sidibe will appear as Arthur and Denise, respectively.
Susan Lucci will play Matthew, and the production will include guest appearances by Christopher Meloni, Cecily Strong, Michael Urie, and Paul Walter Hauser. Cole Escola, who wrote for seasons two and three of the show, is unavailable for the event.
The script depicts characters who have retreated from the entertainment industry and are attempting to make dreams of stardom come true. The reading will feature a musical number and showcase characters who are striving, happy but lying, or excited that someone else appreciates them.
Other characters in the script are not happy, never fight, always know what the others are up to, and are not seeking fame or monetary success.
